Priming a coil means saturating its wick before the heating element gets hot. The job is simple: wet the cotton, fill the tank, wait, and begin gently. More liquid is not always better; pouring it through the center can flood the airflow.
Install the correct coil
Confirm the exact coil family and resistance before opening the package. Similar-looking coils may use different seals or power ranges. Push or screw the coil into place exactly as the manual shows, with no visible gap at the base.
Wet exposed cotton carefully
If the coil has visible cotton ports, place a small drop of e-liquid on each one. The cotton should darken as it absorbs the liquid. Do not fill the hollow center chimney. That passage carries air and excess liquid there can cause gurgling or spitback.
Fixed-coil pods usually do not expose the wick. Simply fill the pod through its designated port.
Fill and wait
Close the fill plug completely and let the device stand upright. Five to ten minutes is a reasonable minimum for many small pods; larger coils or thick high-VG liquid may need longer. Follow the device manual when it gives a specific time.
The waiting period matters because the cotton visible at the outside is not the part touching the heating element. Liquid still has to travel into the center.
Start below your usual wattage
For adjustable devices, begin near the bottom of the range printed on the coil. Take two or three shorter puffs and increase power in small steps only if the result feels weak. There is no prize for reaching the top of the range.
For draw-activated pods, use gentle pulls at first. Pulling hard can drag more liquid into the center than the coil can vaporize.
Signs you used too much liquid
Gurgling, droplets in the mouthpiece, or liquid coming through the airflow suggest flooding rather than poor priming. Remove the pod, wipe the contacts and mouthpiece, and follow the manufacturer's clearing instructions. Do not keep firing the device in an attempt to cook away a large pool of liquid.
If the first puff is already burnt
Stop. Refill if needed and wait longer. If the scorched taste remains, replace the coil. Cotton that burned while dry does not repair itself after it becomes wet.
