Propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) make up most of a typical e-liquid. The ratio between them changes how thick the liquid is and how it behaves in the coil.
PG is thinner. VG is thicker. That simple difference explains many dry hits, flooded coils, and disappointing device matches.
What higher-PG liquid does
PG carries flavor efficiently, produces a more noticeable throat sensation, and creates less dense vapor. Because it flows easily through small wick openings, higher-PG or balanced liquid commonly suits compact, lower-power pods.
The same thinness can become a problem in a large coil designed for thick liquid. If liquid enters faster than the coil vaporizes it, gurgling or leakage can follow.
What higher-VG liquid does
VG is more viscous and produces denser vapor with a softer throat feel. Large, low-resistance coils often have wide wick ports designed to feed thicker high-VG liquid.
A small pod may struggle to pull very thick liquid into its wick quickly enough. The warning signs are a dry taste, reduced flavor during repeated puffs, or a coil that burns early.
Why 50/50 is common in pods
A balanced ratio offers easier wicking than a high-VG blend without being as thin as a high-PG liquid. It is a common starting point for refillable pods, but the device manual is more important than a general rule.
Read the ratio and the hardware together
Do not choose by cloud size alone. Check:
- The manufacturer's liquid recommendation
- Coil resistance and wattage
- Size of the wick openings
- MTL, RDL, or DTL design
- Whether the device has been flooding or running dry
