The resistance printed on a vape coil is measured in ohms, shown with the Ω symbol. It affects how the coil and device use electrical power, but it is only one part of the setup.
Most importantly, matching resistance does not guarantee compatibility. Two 0.8-ohm coils can have completely different shapes, contacts, seals, and power requirements.
Lower resistance usually means more power
Within a product family, a lower-resistance option commonly operates at higher wattage and produces warmer, larger puffs. A higher-resistance option commonly uses less power and liquid and is paired with a tighter draw.
Those are useful tendencies, not universal laws. Coil material, mesh area, airflow, and the device's control system can change the result. Read the printed range rather than calculating from resistance alone.
Resistance and wattage are different labels
Resistance describes how strongly the coil opposes electrical current. Wattage describes the power delivered to it. Regulated devices manage the output needed to reach the selected wattage and often prevent settings outside their supported range.
Do not assume that a 0.4-ohm coil always belongs at a certain wattage because another brand uses that setting. Follow the range on the exact coil.
Why the displayed number moves
A small difference between the printed value and the screen can be normal. Connections, temperature, and manufacturing tolerance affect readings. A large or constantly jumping value is different.
If resistance jumps, turn the device off, let it cool, reseat the coil, and dry the contacts. Replace damaged components. If the warning remains with a known compatible coil, stop using the device and consult its support instructions.
Use resistance to choose a style
Look at the coil's recommended style and airflow along with its resistance. Product families may label options as MTL, RDL, or DTL. That information tells you more about the intended draw than the ohm number by itself.
Compatibility checklist
- Match the full device and pod generation.
- Match the manufacturer's coil family code.
- Confirm the device supports the resistance.
- Use the wattage range printed on that coil.
- Never force a coil into a pod or tank.
