MTL vs. RDL vs. DTL: which draw do you want?

The three labels describe how you inhale and how open the airflow feels. They also point toward different coils, power, and liquid use.

MTL, RDL, and DTL describe draw styles. They are useful because the draw affects airflow, coil choice, power, and how much vapor the device produces per puff.

Choose the style first, then choose compatible hardware. Buying by battery size or maximum wattage before deciding on the draw is backward.

MTL: mouth to lung

An MTL draw brings vapor into the mouth before inhalation. The airflow is relatively tight, power is usually low, and the device produces a smaller amount of vapor per puff.

MTL setups commonly use higher-resistance coils and smaller wick openings. Balanced or higher-PG liquid often wicks well, but use the specific pod recommendation.

DTL: direct to lung

A DTL draw is inhaled directly with open airflow. These setups normally use lower-resistance coils, higher power, and more liquid and battery energy.

Because each puff contains more vapor, liquid strength must be selected with the device output in mind. Thick high-VG liquid is common where large wick openings are designed for it.

RDL: restricted direct lung

RDL sits between the two. The draw is more open than MTL but more restricted than a full DTL inhale. It often uses moderate power and offers a middle ground in vapor, warmth, and liquid use.

The coil and airflow must agree

Closing a DTL coil to a pinhole can make it run hot. Opening an MTL setup completely may feel thin and unfocused. Use a coil labeled for the style you want and start with the airflow near its intended range.

Choose by routine

Consider:

  • How tight you want the draw
  • How much vapor you want per puff
  • Battery and liquid consumption
  • Replacement-coil availability
  • Whether you prefer automatic or button activation

A device that supports multiple styles can be useful, but only if the correct pods and coils remain available.
