Why does my vape taste burnt?

A burnt taste usually comes from a dry or damaged wick. Here is how to identify the cause without sacrificing another coil.

A burnt vape usually means the wick is too dry, the power is too high, or residue has built up on the coil. Stop when the taste appears. Repeated puffs can turn a temporary dry hit into permanent wick damage.

Check the liquid level first

The coil can only stay saturated while liquid reaches its wick openings. A tank may look as if it still contains liquid while one side of the wick is exposed, especially when the device is tilted.

Refill the tank or pod and let it stand upright for several minutes. If the next gentle puff tastes normal, the coil probably dried temporarily. If the scorched taste remains, the cotton may already be damaged.

Lower the power

Look for the recommended wattage range printed on the coil. Start at the bottom of that range rather than the top. Longer puffs often require a lower setting because the coil vaporizes more liquid during each pull.

Do not assume the device's maximum output is suitable for the installed coil. The coil label is the useful limit.

Give the wick time to recover

Several quick puffs can empty the wick faster than the tank replenishes it. A warning often arrives as a dry, unusually hot, or thin-tasting puff before the full burnt flavor appears.

Pause for a few seconds between pulls. If the problem only happens during repeated use, puff timing or liquid thickness is more likely than a defective coil.

Consider the liquid

High-VG liquid is thicker and may feed slowly through the small openings in a compact pod. Very sweet liquid creates a different problem: residue coats the heating surface and eventually gives every flavor a dark, cooked taste.

Use the ratio recommended for your device. If compatible liquid still burns quickly, try a less sweet flavor and compare the result over a full coil cycle.

A new coil needs to soak

Installing a fresh coil and vaping immediately can scorch dry cotton on the first puff. Fill the pod, wait at least five to ten minutes, and use shorter pulls at low power during the first few puffs.

When the coil cannot be saved

Replace the coil or fixed-coil pod if the burnt taste continues after refilling, cooling the device, and lowering the power. Washing a cotton stock coil cannot reverse scorched wick material, and dry-burning it will cause more damage.

Read how to prime a coil correctly before installing the replacement.
